Who is Nemo, then?
He's Natural Man, the low-profile power behind the throne, though he has no ambition to exercise "control" over anything other than his next meal. He lives by going with the flow, staying in the present, and always landing on his feet -- at least one jump ahead of the Boss.
Who is Ava?
Short answer: our feminine side. But that's not an adequate explanation; Ava provides a sharp, tough, and straightforward aspect to the "host organism".
I don't understand who the "kid" character is.
The kid is the kid inside us all ... or what's left of him. In a way, he's an earlier, more innocent version of the Boss.
What's with that old monkey, Fuzzy?
I think of Fuzzy as the Boss who is yet to be. We all know that old folks can be wiser, more fatalistic, and more practical than we are, so the template is there inside all of us to become that person. The details don't get filled in until we arrive at old age, but that protogeezer is there from the beginning.
